Fatehpur Sikkri
Fatehpur Sikri is a small city built by Mughal Emperor Akbar. It took 14 – 15 years to build yet it was only occupied for ~ 10 years. The reason Akbar built this city and shifted his capital to it was that the Sufi Saint Salim Chishti (his guru) lived in the area and did not want to leave. To honor him, Akbar built Fatehpur Sikkri. It was abandoned so shortly after it was built due to water shortages and a change in Akbar’s political intrests. Later, when the British occupied India they set up a base in Fathepur Sikkri, yet abandoned it very quickly; this led to rumours of it being haunted by ghosts.
The architecture of the city is beautiful, with mosques, palaces and courtyards blending seamlessly into an elegant complex, showing Akbar’s lavish taste and style. You can only visit a small part of the city, but even that took us half a day!
Agra Fort
Agra fort is a graceful compound, designed for practability and defense in warfare, as well as comfort and a luxurious lifestyle. The rooms are all sumptuously decorated and the spacious courtyards give an airy feel. Did you know that the Raja would sleep with one foot on the floor so that if the castle was attacked he could get up quickly, and if he was tied to his bed he could still stand?
